Books, Inc.

Yesterday, I was helping my friend Sam search thrift shops to find props for a movie he’s working on. He’s dressing a set which calls for a huge number of books. Over 200 hardbound books, which had to look “scholarly”. So, no major author’s names could be visible. We got Out of the Closet thrift store to rent 100 books to us for $50.00. The NON PROFIT St Vincent DePaul shop downtown would hear of no such deal. The best they would give us was .25 off per book.

Religious bastards.

You should have seen the look on the poor little clerqita’s face when we hauled up to the register with a cartload of 103 hardbound books. She immediately fled to the nearest telefono and engaged in a rapid stream of panicked espanol, presumably to St.Vinnie himself I guess.

 Or Cardinal Mahoney.

Anyway, in the book search, I couldn’t help but notice, as I scanned several stores worth of literary discard that a small group of authors seems to generate the greatest amount of donated (meaning no longer wanted)  material. They would be Stephen King, Robert Ludlum, and John Grisham. But in the absolute overwhelming majority is that eminent slattern of literary sludge, Missss Daniele Steele. Holy Mother of God, one shop had a whole SECTION set aside for her crap. Who buys it? Who reads it?

For myself I picked up a 2nd printing hardbound copy of the literary opus “Mommie Dearest”by CHRISTINA!!!!! Crawford. Can’t wait to read it. Also, I found the William Manchester biography  of Winston Churchill and the volume of Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson’s dirty letters to each other. Fun stuff.
